Cytoreductive surgery is the foundation of advanced ovarian cancer treatment: a systematic operation of the entire abdomen with one goal — no visible tumor left behind. It may involve surgery on the peritoneum, bowel, spleen, diaphragm or liver capsule, performed in a single session by a team prepared for each step. HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) adds a 60–90 minute lavage of heated chemotherapy inside the abdomen at the end of surgery, targeting microscopic cells that surgery cannot see; in randomized trials of selected ovarian cancer patients it has improved survival.

Prof. Erdemoğlu built his cytoreductive surgery practice at the Ovarian Cancer Center of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan — as a visiting surgeon assisting operations with the IEO team — and through the ESAGON advanced ovarian cancer surgery program, with additional training as visiting surgeon in cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan. His published research includes the impact of bowel resection in advanced ovarian cancer and ongoing comparative work on HIPEC versus intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
