PROF. DR. EVRİM ERDEMOĞLU

Recurrent Gynecologic Cancers

A recurrence is not the end of the road.

When a gynecologic cancer returns, the decisive question is whether the recurrence can be completely removed. In carefully selected patients, secondary cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer, or pelvic exenteration for centrally recurrent cervical, vaginal or uterine cancer after radiotherapy, can offer a real chance of long-term survival — but these are among the most demanding operations in surgical oncology and belong in experienced hands.

Prof. Erdemoğlu has published on developments in pelvic exenteration in gynecologic oncology and performs the full range of salvage surgery, including ultraradical multivisceral resection, urinary and bowel reconstruction, and robot-assisted approaches to exenteration presented at international congresses. Every recurrence case is reviewed individually — imaging, prior treatments, pathology — before any recommendation is made, and honest counsel is part of the treatment: surgery is proposed only when it can genuinely help.

When to seek consultation:

Recurrent ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer; a recurrence described as “inoperable” — a structured second opinion is often worthwhile.
